Like the Andrea Gabrieli motet on this disc, Deus noster refugium is another double-choir work believed to have been written for a Venetian Lepanto celebration. Setting verses from Psalm 46, it is by Giovanni Gabrieli’s colleague Giovanni Bassano, maestro at St. Mark’s from 1601.

Deus noster refugium et virtus
adiutor in tribulationibus
quae invenerunt nos nimis.
Propterea non timebimus dum turbabitur terra
et transferentur montes in cor maris;
sonaverunt et turbatae sunt aquae eorum
conturbati sunt montes in fortitudine eius.

God is our refuge and strength
an ever-present help in the face of the troubles
that have confronted us beyond endurance.
Therefore will we not fear, even if the earth be moved
and the mountains carried into the midst of the sea;
though their waters roar and be troubled;
though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

4) The recording of the plainchant ‘Salve Regina’ which should come at the end of the Vespers service – in our reconstruction, just before ‘In ecclesiis’.

5) Les textes en Français /Die gesungenen Texte in deutscher Übersetzung
